Aziz Nesin (1915 – 1995), écrivain turc.

Ayant entamé une carrière d’officier, Aziz Nesin l’abandonne rapidement pour l’écriture. En 1946, il fonde la revue satirique Markopasa avec l’écrivain Sabahattin Ali, puis, en 1962, la revue Zübük, dont la causticité lui vaut d’être plusieurs fois emprisonné.

Romancier (Azizname, 1948, Yasar n’est ni vivant ni mort, 1977, prix Madarali du meilleur roman), auteur de pièces de théâtre (Çiçu, 1970), il se fera surtout connaître par ses nouvelles qui lui vaudront de nombreux prix, et dans lesquelles il critique avec virulence la société et l’administration (Queue de chien, 1955, La fanfare des casseroles, 1956, Nous ne pouvons être des hommes, 1962, Sous les armes, Les trois Karagoz (guignols), Les gens se réveillent, 1965, les Enfants d’aujourd’hui sont des génies, 1967…).

Un procès en diffamation intenté contre lui par la reine d’Angleterre, le chah d’Iran et le roi d’Égypte en 1949, lui valut six mois d’emprisonnement.

Grand défenseur de la laïcité et de la démocratie, Aziz Nesin s’engage dans la création d’assises démocratiques en 1989 et est élu co-président du Comité du suivi des libertés démocratiques.

Aziz Nesin left his career as an army officer to become a writer. In 1946, he founded Markopasa, a satirical magazine, together with the writer Sabahattin Ali, then, in 1962, Zubuk, a magazine whose savage satire caused him to be thrown into prison on several occasions.

A novelist (Azizname, 1948, Yasar Is Neither Dead Nor Alive, 1977, which won the Madarali prize for the best novel) a playwright (Ciçu, 1970) he was best known for his short stories which won him many awards, and in which he criticizes society and the administration virulently (Dog’s Tail, 1955, Saucepan Fanfare, 1956, We Cannot Be Men, 1962, Under Fire, The Three Karagoz (Puppets), People Are Waking Up, 1965, Children Today are Geniuses, 1967….)

Libel proceedings were taken out against him by the Queen of England, the Shah of Iran and the King of Egypt in 1949, and he was given a six months’ sentence in prison.

Aziz Nesin was a great defender of secularity and democracy and participated in the setting-up of a democratic court in 1989 and was elected co-chairman of the Committee for the Monitoring of Civil Liberties.
