What is the "Dahir berbère" and what do we really know
about this decree ? At first sight, this question might seem absurd.
All Moroccans, at least those who have been at school, know that the
"Dahir berbère" is a decree promulgated on May 1930
by the French colonial authorities to separate the Arabs from their
"brothers" the Berbers. But was that really the point? What
is the content of this decree? Who promulgated it and who signed it?
What was the reaction of the Amazighs like, knowing that at this period,
3/4 of the Moroccan population were Berbers ? Why did the Nationalist
Movement, based essentially in Fès and Rabat, ride this subject
to death and what were the consequences of this on the present-day Morocco?
These questions and others need to be raised and dealt with carefully.
Berberworld.com place
a numbers of articles, an interview and the decree at your disposal so
as to clear the matter up. Between the alarmism of The Nationalist Movement
and the reality, an enormous bridge made up of myths and fear has completely
falsified this decree and made the Amazigh guilty of a mistake they had
never made but which they have been assuming for more than seventy years
now. Decidedly, the Nationalist Movement myths seem to be everlasting.
But there is an end for everything.
